Sepia Saturday - Horses and carts

My paternal grandfather, Jim Forsyth (born James Richard Musson).  Written on back of photo is "Jim at Mooroopna" so possibly taken mid to late1940s.

My maternal grandmother, Daisy Marion Fleming nee Morgan probably taken in the Wangaratta, Myrtleford area of North East Victoria.

Written on the back of this photo that belonged to my paternal grandfather is "Mac's whare", Mac and Fat, which were nicknames of his brothers, Eric and Ian Musson and a couple of other illegible names.
A whare is a maori hut or dwelling but I'm also told was also a name for a relocatable type of dwelling.  This one was used when the men went out doing harvesting or hunting I think. Possibly taken early to mid 1930s around the Christchurch or Rangiora area.

A photo from New Zealand, possibly Rangiora, of my paternal grandfathers young niece, Lynley Barker with a chap named Ted Walls or Wallis.  I haven't found his connection to the family.  This photo was possibly taken around 1934 or 5.

Taken in New Zealand, possibly Forsyth or Musson family members

  1. A wonderful collection of photos Kerryn. I love these old photos but I wonder if in 100 years, they will look at photos of our cars and tractors today in awe? I just can't see it!

  2. I've seen a number of these 2-wheeled carts today throughout Sepia-ville but none like the one your grandmother is on -- it looks like a giant crate. Judging by that fine set of antlers, the hut must have been used quite a bit in hunting season.

  3. Oh, I think I'd be a bit nervous sitting way up there where your grandmother, Daisy, is sitting in that 2-wheeled wagon! (gulp) The hut on wheels, of course, is a forerunner of today's RV. Love the antler decoration!

  6. Excellent choice of photos for your post. So much going on in them all. I especially like the trees in the first one. I wonder what the story was there?!

  8. Your grandfather and his horses reminds very much of my own grandfather in Canada with his horses and cart. Great series of photos.

  9. What a fantastic set of photos! I particularly like the one of the "whare" - I'd never heard of that before. It's such a great photo of the men and the dogs too and I wish I knew more about them.

  11. Great series of photos! I really like the one of the whare - decorated with antlers and it even looks like it has curtains in the windows. Probably a really convenient way of living and a time saver!

  12. A fine set of photos and actually the first is my favourite; those horses are standing so patiently. I don’t know if you realise that you have word verification switched on. We’ve almost eradicated it on Sepia Saturday now. Using comment moderation seems to do the job well enough for the majority of us.

  13. That is a particularly fine set of photos brdiging the ocean from Aus to NZ. But I'm glad I don't have to get out the horse and cart to go shopping.. I think I would be quite intimidated at the thought of controlling a large animal.
