William Thomas Morgan Obituary 1950

My Mum's Grandad, Bill (William Thomas) MORGAN, passed away on the 19th of December 1950.
He was born in Euroa, Victoria in 1872.  The fourth son of Thomas Fitzherbert MORGAN and Mary Ann (Marian) nee PIKE.

OBITUARY

Mr. William T. Morgan

Aged 78, Mr William Thomas Morgan, Moyhu, died in the Wangaratta Base Hospital early on Tuesday morning.  He had been in failing health for the past few months, and a patient in Hospital for a week.

Born at Euroa, he came to the Moyhu district over 50 years ago.

He was first employed at Redcamp and was then share farming with Shanley Bros.  He retired from active life about eight years ago.

Mr. Morgan took no active part in public life, but was well liked by all.

He is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Ada Hulme, Milawa, and the following family: Herbert (Moyhu), Clarice (Mrs. Jones, Moyhu), Daisy (Mrs. A Fleming, Hansonville), Mavis (Mrs. L. Robinson, Myrtleford), and Lila (Mrs. H. Flanigan, Katamatite).

Brothers are George (Euroa), Robert (Edi Upper), Jack (Berrigan, NSW), and Edward (Seymour).

Funeral took place yesterday at the Milawa cemetery where the Reverend A.T. Stevens officiated at the graveside.

Coffin bearers were Messrs H. Morgan, son, K Fleming, N Jones, grandsons, H Flanagan, son-in-law, Messrs H. Hulme, brother-in-law, P. Shanley, K. Lewis, F. Bowen, R. Jones, A. Gibson and W. Gibson.

52 Ancestors Week 14 - Favourite photo

My favourite photo is of my maternal grandmother, Daisy Marion MORGAN 
and her sister Clarice May MORGAN.

Clarice was born in September 1905 and Daisy in August 1908.
I think this photo would probably have been taken in about 1910 or 11.

Clarice and Daisy were both born at Moyhu, Victoria, the eldest and second eldest of four daughters of William Thomas MORGAN and Ada May HULME.  All four daughters had boys nicknames.

Clarice, (nickname Tod) married David JONES in 1930.  They had two children.  Clarice died at Wangaratta, Victoria in January 1998.

Daisy, (nickname Billy) married Archie FLEMING in 1932.  They had four children.  Daisy died at Shepparton, Victoria in December 1998.

Seeking family of Rowland John Jones of Moyhu

My step dad gave me a little embroidered postcard he had found and asked if I could trace any family for it.

We would like to try to reunite the postcard with family members.

He couldn't remember exactly where it was found but he thinks it may have been in an opportunity shop he and my mum did voluntary work for before she passed away.

A letter was written on the back by Rowland (Rowlie) Jones and it was sent from France in 1916 to a young girl named Clarice.

Dear Clarice 
It is too bad of me not to have answered your most welcome letter before.  It is very good of you to write so often.  I was pleased to get your letter yesterday and also one from your mother and was pleased to hear you are all well.  No doubt you are a big girl now and a great help to your mother.  I am enjoying good health and very seldom have a days illness.  I hope you like this card.  I will close. Hope this finds you all well.  With kindest regards to all.

Thankfully the letter had Rowlies' Battalion and service number so into the Australian War Memorial search where I found his embarkation information and then his war service record in  National Archives.

There I found he was born in 1893 at Milawa, Victoria and next of kin was his father who had the frustratingly common name of David Jones.  Their address was Moyhu, Victoria.

I knew where Moyhu was, my maternal grandmother and her siblings were all born there and funnily enough in later years (1930) my grandmother's eldest sister, whose name was also Clarice, married a David Jones! Our Clarice would have been 13 years old in 1918 and they also lived at Moyhu.
Family friends with perhaps a later connection ...... I wonder?......... perhaps more searching to do there.

Into  Ancestry.com.au, and Trove,  to search for Rowland "Rowlie" J Jones.

In Trove I found this article which disagrees somewhat with his statement to young Clarice that he was enjoying good health:

Rowlie was a farmer at Moyhu and after the war he married Isabel Munro.  They farmed at Moyhu for the remainder of their lives.  Isabel died in 1968 and Rowlie lived on until he was 94 years old in 1987.

I don't know if they had any surviving children but sadly it seems they lost 3 young sons between 1932 and 1935.  Ian in 1932 age 3.  Rowland jnr in 1934 and John in 1935  (haven't found their birth years)

They are all buried at the Milawa cemetery along with some other of their family members.

Rowlies mother was Elizabeth nee Cozens, she married David Jones in 1892.
He had a younger brother named William Cozens Jones and four younger sisters, Louisa, Mary, Ida and Edith.

Wedding Wednesday - Clarice Morgan

Clarice May Morgan married David Jones in 1930.  Her bridesmaid was her sister, (my nana), Daisy Marion Morgan and the best man was the groom's brother, Ernie Jones.

Clarice, known to us as "Aunty Tod" because all the girls in the family had boys nicknames, was born at Moyhu on the 23rd of September 1905. She was the eldest daughter of William Thomas Morgan and Ada May nee Hulme.
Aunty Tod died at Wangaratta on the 16th of January 1998, aged 92 years.  Her husband David died at the very young age of 35 in 1942.  They had 2 children, Carol and Neil both now deceased.

Wedding Wednesday - Archie Fleming and Daisy Morgan

A quiet but pretty wedding was celebrated at the home of the bride's parents "Willow Bank" Moyhu, on Saturday, October 8th, when Daisy Marion, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, became the wife of Mr. Archie W. F. (third son of Mrs. D. Fleming "Valley View", King Valley, and the late Mr. D. Fleming).
The Rev M.C. Day of Wangaratta officiated.  The charming bride, who was given away by her father, was tastefully gowned in ankle length white satin with a yoke of silk lace.  A fitting bodice and slender skirt with fullness given by inlet pleated flares.  Her beautiful veil of embroidered tulle (lent by her sister Mrs. D. Jones) was worn cap fashion, and held by a wreath of orange blossom.  She also wore a necklace of crystal beads, and carried a bouquet of semi-sheaf arum lilies, intermingled with maiden hair fern and white satin streamers.  The bride was attended by her sister Miss Mavis Morgan, whose pretty ankle-length frock of powder blue  satin, with puff sleeves, looked very attractive with her head band of satin and flowers.  Her pretty posy was of arum lilies, maiden hair fern and pink satin streamers.  Mr. H Fleming was best man.  Immediately after the ceremony satin horse shoes were placed on the arm of the bride by her little brother Bert, and little Graeme McLaren (nephew of the bridegroom) and Caroline Jones (neice of the bride).  After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents.  The tables looked charming, the central decoration being a tiered wedding cake.  The bride's travelling frock was of maroon crepe-de-chene with hat to tone.  The bride's gift to the bridegroom was a travelling rug and that of the bridegroom to the bride a xylonite toilet set and to the bridesmaid a xylonite clock.  Many beautiful presents were received, including many cheques.  The future home of Mr. and Mrs. Fleming will be at "Greenfields" King Valley.

My maternal grandparents, Daisy Morgan and Archibald William Finlay Fleming were married for 45 devoted years.
