Tombstone Tuesday - Milawa cemetery

I am lucky to have found photos of many ancestors and family members headstones.

This post is for the geneabloggers daily blogging prompt, Tombstone Tuesday.

Some sadly no longer exist so I am recording those that do and I'm very grateful to Carol Judkins for all her work photographing and recording headstones.

My 4 x great grandmother, Mary Land, nee Bush, is buried with her young grandson, Robert Joseph Land, at Milawa cemetery, in North East Victoria, Australia.

The old original broken headstone has been replaced by a new one.  I don't know when or by whom as my request to Carol for copies of photos is the first time I have seen them.

The list of cemeteries photographed can be found at  Carol's headstone photos

Mary's husband Joseph died in Norfolk, England in 1852 so Mary came to Australia in 1862 with her daughter, Hephzibah and son in law William Cluff Hulme.  Other family members had earlier already migrated here.

My lineage to Mary Land is as follows:

me
mum - Amelia Joan Fleming (1937 -2012)
grandmother - Daisy Marion Fleming nee Morgan (1908 - 1998)
great grandmother - Ada May Morgan nee Hulme (1884 - 1965)
gg grandfather - Joseph Hulme (1843 - 1920)
ggg grandmother - Hephzibah Hulme nee Land (1815- 1887)
gggg grandmother - Mary Land nee Bush (1786 - 1875)

Tombstone Tuesday - But there is no Tombstone

John Kelly died at Yackandandah on the 28th of July 1905.  He seemed to have rather a tragic life.

An Inquest was held and John was buried at the Yackandandah cemetery on the 30th of July 1905.  There is no headstone but his grave has been photographed for me by Peter Ross.
He used his green folder as a marker.

The following articles appeared in the Melbourne Argus and the Advertiser Newspapers on the 29th of July 1905. From Trove

Then the following article appeared in the Evening Post newspaper in Wellington New Zealand where John Kelly's brother, Thomas and their nephew Alexander Morgan were living. From Papers Past news archives

John was born at Dualla, Tipperary around 1840. Parents Cornelius Kelly and Mary Moloughney.
His Baptism record was dated 20 Jun 1840 at Newpark, Sponsors were William Mahony, Mary Ryan.

Along with his brothers Thomas and William he arrived in Australia from Ireland just in time for his elder sister's wedding in Melbourne on the 30th of June 1858.

John married Mary Ann Francis at Tarraville, Gippsland, Victoria on the 6th of February 1869.  They may have had a son John born in 1869 but I have found no further record or proof of his connection.

Mary Ann and John then had a daughter they named Mary Francis.  She was born in 1871.

Then came Alice Francis about 1874.  In 1900 Alice married a Denis Winters.
Alice died at Fitzroy in 1939.

Both John Kelly's wife Mary Ann and daughter Mary Francis died in Melbourne in 1888.  I have yet to purchase their death certificates and find out where they are buried.

Tombstone Tuesday - George Kellam Bird

George Kellam Bird was my great-great-grand Uncle - the brother of my great-great grandmother Catherine Bird.
Like his father before him, George Bird was a wheelwright.  Actually George was a Master Wheelwright.
He was born in 1820 at Foston, Lincolnshire, England, the eldest son of Mark and Mary Bird nee Kellam.  Mark and Mary died young, both in 1834 aged  about 45 and 38 years respectively.
Their seventh and youngest child, Mark, was only 2 years old.
George would have been about 14 so probably already out earning a living.

His maternal grandfather, George Kellam was also a Master Wheelwright.
This could be how George's parents met.

George would have been taught his trade by his father and following his father's death his grandfather would have continued to teach him the trade.. Young Mark was living with his grandfather in the 1841 census at Waltham-on-the-Wolds and then with his big brother, George at Corby in the 1851 census.

He moved to Corby Glen in Lincolnshire and lived there for many years until his death in 1885.
In 1847 George had married Ann Loughter.  They had one son in 1849, also named George and this George Bird junior also became a wheelwright.

The cast iron grave marker for George's grave at St. John the Evangelist churchyard at Corby Glen is rather impressively painted black with gold lettering.

My cousin Cathy is currently about to visit Lincolnshire where our Bird family originated.

This photo is from the website   http://www.churchmousewebsite.co.uk/Cast_Iron.htm#corby
but I don't know how long ago it was taken.  Perhaps Cathy will visit the resting place of our relative, George Kellam Bird.
