Stanley Raymond Tuckett

Stanley Raymond Tuckett was born on the 8th of March 1919 in Kensington, Victoria, Australia.

 He was the second eldest son of Ambrose Percival Tuckett and Violet Maude Gibb.

Stanley married Hazel Stephens on the 14th of August 1939 at Collingwood, Victoria.

He was a painter and decorator.

Stanley served in the Citizens Military Forces from the 26th of March until the 20th of October 1942.

Stanley enlisted and served with the Australian Army Ordnance Corps.

He served in the Army from the 21st of October, 1942 until the 1st of February, 1946.

At the time of enlistment Stanley and Hazel were living at 2 Kiewa St, Clifton Hill, Victoria.
Sadly, in 1943, their firstborn son Raymond Lyle Tuckett passed away aged only 9 months.

At some stage during his war service, Stanley contracted Malaria and suffered relapses throughout the rest of his life.

Stanley and Hazel went on to have a daughter and another son during the war. 

In early 1946 Stanley was transferred to the Camp Pell leave and transit depot at Royal Park, Parkville for discharge.

After the war, Hazel and Stanley had two more daughters.

Stanley passed away on the 24th of April 1972  and Hazel on the 20th of June 2015.

Private Ambrose Percival TUCKETT

Ambrose Percival Tuckett was born the youngest of 7 children in Nathalia, Victoria in March 1894 to parents Thomas George Tuckett and Alice nee Fleming.

On the 1st of March 1916, he married Violet Maude Gibb at Parkville in Victoria.

Ambrose enlisted in the A.I.F. on the 3rd of October 1916 at the age of 22 years and 5 months.  He gave his occupation as Storeman and was married to Violet Tuckett first of 6 Lambeth Street, Kensington and later at 23 Southgate Street, Parkville.

On enlistment, Ambrose was still serving with the Citizen Forces.  He was 5 foot 7 and a half inches tall with a medium complexion, brown hair and brown eyes.  Religious denomination Church of England.

He initially served in A company of the 23rd battalion but within a month was transferred to H company of the 2nd Battalion then into K company and finally to the 24th Battalion just a week before embarkation on the ship 'Hororata' on the 23rd of November 1916.

They arrived at Plymouth, England on the 29th of January 1917. 
Five months later he was in France with his battalion which 
"took part in its first major offensive around Pozieres and Mouquet Farm in July and August 1917. 
The Battalion got little rest during the bleak winter of 1916-17 alternating between the front and labouring tasks. When patrolling no man's land the men of the 24th adopted a unique form of snow camouflage - large white nighties bought in Amiens.
In May 1917 the battalion participated in the successful, but a costly second battle of Bullecourt. It was involved for only a single day ' 3 May ' but suffered almost 80 percent casualties. The AIF's focus for the rest of the year was the Ypres sector in Belgium, and the 24th's major engagement there was the seizure of Broodseinde Ridge."

Ambrose was recorded as "Sick" a casualty on the 22nd of September 1917 later being classified as Shell Shocked. 
He had pains all over the body, very shaky hands and couldn't sleep due to the pain.
On the afternoon of the 20th of September, he claimed he was blown over by a shell and felt stunned for a while, very giddy and shaky and was taken to M.O. by Sgt Major.

On the 21st of November, his next of kin were advised he was wounded.

In the next entry, it says he was admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital at Stourbridge with Severe shell shock on the 15th of December 1917.

On January 2nd, 1918 his next of kin were advised that he was in the hospital and on January 23rd they were advised that his condition was stationary and by the 25th he was convalescent.

His next of kin were advised on the 27th of February, 1918 that he was returning to Australia.

Returned to Australia from England per "Dunluce Castle" on the 24th of January 1918.
Discharged 30th of April 1918.

Ambrose went on to have 4 children with Violet.
He later married Harriet Jessie Cayzer nee Albon in 1945 and they also had 4 children.

Ambrose Percival Tuckett died of Myocardial infarction at Leongatha on the 14th of June 1958.  He is buried in the Leongatha cemetery.

Large Family - 52 Ancestors - Week 37

The largest family in my ancestry would have to be my Mum's FLEMING family.
Cousin Debbie FRANK says her Mum, Edna nee FLEMING,  told her she would probably be related to half of Victoria through the FLEMING family.  
I think she may have been right.

Our common great-great-grandfather, Willian Finlay/Finley FLEMING and his wife Ann Jane KNIGHT (above) had 13 children and many of those went on to have large families.

Ann Jane - (1853-1925) married Arthur THOMPSON and had 10 children
William James - (1855-1931) married Johanna FISHER and had 12 children.
Donald, my great grandfather - (1860-1921) married Margaret HART and had 11 children.
Alice - (1863-1944) married Thomas TUCKETT and had 7 children.
Finlay - (1864-1910) married Jessie SPLATT and had 9 children.
Moses - (1866-1939) married Mary HUGHS and had 9 children.
Matilda - (1870-1956) married Charles WORRALL and had 9 children.
John Knight - (1875-1954) married Margaret SPLATT and had 11 children.
Selina Maude - (1878-1952) married Samuel LAURENCE, they only had 2 children.

Ellen, Sarah, Ruth and Christina FLEMING all died in infancy.

Sunday's Obituary - Donald Fleming

My great grandfather, Donald Fleming.  (1860 - 1921)

Every time I look at his photo I see his son (my grandfather) Archie's smiling eyes.

Mr. Donald Fleming died suddenly on Thursday afternoon, Thursday 22nd December, 1921, at his home in King Valley.  He appeared to be in his normal state of health that day but about 4 o'clock he collapsed and died.  The occurrence was reported to Constable Harry, of  Whitfield, and an inquiry was held by J.J. Stephens, J.P. of Whitfield when a verdict of death from natural causes was recorded.

The late Mr. Fleming was a son of Mr. and Mrs W.F. Fleming of Edi and 62 years of age.  Born at Castlemaine and after some years residence in the Goulburn Valley district he settled at King Valley about 30 years ago, and there with Mrs. Fleming and members of his family carried on mixed farming, dairying receiving most of his attention.

Mr. Fleming took an interest in many district movements and was an active worker towards their success.  He was a member of the King Valley school committee and a trustee of the cemetery.  He was well respected in the district and the news of his sudden death was heard of with deep regret by the residents.

Mr. Fleming, who was married at Echuca to Margaret Hart is survived by his wife and grown up family of 10 children.  Members of the family are:-  Messrs Alf (Melbourne), who was the 14th man to enlist in the A.I.F. rising to the rank of lieutenant.; Donald; Archie; and Harold Fleming (King Valley)

Mesdames H. Crockett; Black; and Routledge (of Albury); Mrs A Barry (Myrtleford) and Misses Nellie and Myrtle Fleming (King Valley)

Brothers and sisters of the deceased are:-  J.K. Fleming (Wangaratta); W.J. Fleming (Northcote) and M. Fleming (Wyalong NSW)

Mesdames Tuckett (Kensington); Worrall (Brunswick); and Thompson (Nth Melbourne)
