fans, faces, national costumes and hidden meanings

This is my first Sepia Saturday post but I love to read others so I thought I'd give it a go.

I couldn't find any fans in my family history photos but I did find a national costume.

Below is a photo of my husband's grandmother with her mother and Margaret's little grandson, Lawrence dressed in the Scottish national costume.  This photo would most likely have been taken at Ballarat, Victoria in the early 1930s

L-R Annie Duncan nee Robertson, Lawrence Taylor and Margaret Taylor nee Duncan.
I thought I'd also add the following photo which has always been called "the fancy dress" in our family.  Made by my maternal grandmother, Daisy Fleming nee Morgan.

Photo may have been taken at Moyhu possibly late 1920s
As I still have the dress below is a photo of it today.

  1. Lawrence is a little cutie. But that patchwork dress is wonderful. I wonder if she originally made it from pieces of old clothes as a kind of memory dress. It really is a work of art.

    1. I did another post on dress and Nana's crafts a couple of years ago. In it is a closer photo of detail in the dress if you'd like to have a look at http://ancestorchaser.blogspot.com.au/2012/06/c-is-for-crafty.html

  2. The "fancy dress" is indeed a work of art. The scraps are thoughtfully arranged. I especially like the rectangular panel with medallion. You're so lucky to have a photo of Daisy in the dress. I saw on Pinterest the other day where someone had framed a dress along with some photos. Framing baby dresses is nothing new, but this was an actual adult dress, so it was a pretty big frame!

  3. I love the dress! It is a work of art. I would call it the "crazy" dress because it has pieces like a crazy quilt.

    1. Apart from the appreciation of the work and beauty of quilting I really know nothing about it. Mum would always comment on how Nana could make such tiny perfect stitches and I remember her saying the dress was made from any scraps of material they could get hold of. Nothing was wasted.

  5. Lawrence is absolutely adorable! The fancy dress is very creative. I'm glad you were able to show it to us in color. Too bad you don't still have the cloche hat. Did Daisy make that, too? And is that Daisy modeling her masterpiece?

  6. As others have noted, Lawrence is a little doll in that outfit - although I suppose he wouldn't have appreciated being called such. The crazy patchwork dress is amazing! I wonder where Daisy wore it? It wouldn't have been the usual mode of dress - that's for sure! And welcome to Sepia Saturday. A great way to start out!!! Hope you'll continue to share with us.

  8. Welcome to Sepia Saturday. I look forward to reading your future posts.
The patchwork dress is amazing, and even more amazing is the fact that you still have it! Have you shown it to a local quilt group?

    1. Thanks for the welcome Lorraine. I have shown the dress to a quilting cousin (unrelated to my nana Daisy) and she was loved it too but not being a quilter I don't know a local quilt group. I shall keep my eyes open for one.

  10. Welcome to Sepia Saturday - and what a great post which will, I sincerely hope, be the first of many. It was amazing seeing that dress in the photograph and then again in that modern colour shot.

    1. Hi Marilyn, at first I didn't use the captcha thingy but was getting so many spam comments I decided to use it. I didn't know about the facebook page, have sent request to join so I can see the topic. I'll turn it off again and see what happens.

  12. The fancy dress is quite wonderful. It reminds me of an aerial shot flying over farm land.

    1. I hadn't thought of that angle, quite possible as Nana was a farm girl.
